Noted playwright, filmmaker, actor and Jnanapith awardee Girish Karnad, breathed his last on Monday. He was 81, and was suffering from prolonged illness.

According to the veteran film and theatre personality's wish, there will be no official or religious ceremonies will be held. The family members, his wife Dr. Saraswati Ganapathy has said that the last rites of Girish Karnad will be held in Kalpalli crematorium in Byappanahalli. They appeal to the fans and followers who wish to pay their respects, to visit the crematorium as there will be no official or religious ceremonies.

Meanwhile, the state government has expressed that if Karnad's family agrees, an official ceremony will be arranged.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has also tweeted expressing his grief. "Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him. His works will continue being popular in the years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace." It may be noted that Karnad, had openly opposed Modi's candidature as Prime Minister during 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
