One of the famous directors of yesteryears of Kannada cinema V.Somasekhar (66) died of kidney failure on Friday morning at St.John’s hospital. He leaves behind his wife two sons and lot of memories through his films.
He has directed 49 films in 40 years of his film career. Some of the noted films of Somasekhar are Bangaradha Panjara, Premadha Kanike, Shanker Guru, Thayige Thakka Maga, Parashuram (All starring Dr.Rajkumar – Shanker Guru the triple role of Dr.Raj was remade in all the languages) Seetharamu, Devara aata, Kalinga, Chakravyuha, Point Parimala, Ranaranga, S.P.Bhargavi and others. All these films of Somasekhar are super hits.
Born in Chikkanahalli near Devanahalli Somasekhar came to this field hoping to become an actor in 1955 at the age of 18. He joined as clap boy in Madras worked as extra artistes, dubbing artiste, assistant director to veteran R.Nagendra Rao, N.G.Rajan, Y.R.Swamy, Ramamurthy, Babu Rao before he became an independent director in 1974 from ‘Bangarada Panjara’. He has directed all top stars of Kannada filmdom and got the nick name as star director. His direction got action hero image to Ambarish and Shanker Nag.
He was off late doing the tilling of land in his three acres of land. He is the winner of prestigious Puttanna Kanagal award given by the Karnataka government for the year 1999-2000. He was the President of Kannada Film Directors Association, working committee member of Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce.
Every day is a new lease of life as I am undergoing kidney dialysis two times a day he had recently told.
The body of this respected director of Kannada cinema V.Somasekhar would be available for paying last respect at his Jalahalli house till 12 noon. Later he would be cremated at Vijipura near Devanahalli.
