The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has issued notice to Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce along with four fraternal organisations like Kannada film producers association, Kannada film directors association, Film Workers and technicians organization (Okkutta) and Kannada Chalanachithra Academy as to why the dubbing of films or television serials has to be stopped in Karnataka while it is not done in any other states of the country. The Karnataka Television Association has also received a similar notice from CCI.
The petition has been filed by Karnataka Grahakara Sangha and Mr. Ganesh Chethan individually seeking the direction of CCI to intervene and get the benefit for the consumers to see the dubbed version of the well made films and Television serials in other languages. "We want to see the other language films where in the characters speak in the local Kannada language so as to enable us to understand it better' says the content of the petition.
It may be recalled that the voices in favour of allowing the Dubbing of films was supported by several pro Kannada groups in the FB. Ganesh Chethan is one of the popular names in FB who has always been advocating the dubbing of films from other languages.
It is to be seen how the entire industry is going to tackle this new challenge. Already the tightening noose of CCI has made KFCC to spend lacs of rupees for restricting the number of theatres to non Kannada films. It looks that the entire industry has to sit and take an appropriate decision now, as even opposing the dubbing of films of other languages may be viewed as being unconstitutional.
