Who is running the 12th Bengaluru International Film Festival (BIFFes)? Technically it is the State Government through its Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (KCA) and supported by Kannada film industry bodies like the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and others. But in reality, it is BookMyShow, a private enterprise and which is constantly in conflict with Kannada film makers which is running the show. 

If you want to participate in this year's film festival, you have to virtually get the approval from BookMyShow. The KCA has handed over the programme to BMS lock stock and barrel. Every ticket and every pass for the festival has to be purchased from BMS. 

Film theaters sell a few rows of seats through BMS. But for BIFFes, it is 100% of the seats. Even the media passes will come through BMS. A press note from the organisers says, "On behalf of Department of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) and Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy (KCA), Government of Karnataka, the Media Passes for 12th BIFFES 2020 (Bengaluru International Film Festival -2020) will only  be processed  by Book My Show unlike earlier years."

For over two weeks now, the capitulation of KCA to BMS has been a topic of discussion in the film industry. But the scale of this surrender is only now being felt when the tickets and passes are being issued. The film industry is yet to come out of the shock. A kiosk has been set up on the KFCC premises to felicitate film personalities to obtain passes. A lone executive's only job is to tell everyone to log on to BMS.

For the KFCC this is salt on its wounds. There are several complaints by producers against BMS pending in KFCC. In recent months several producers have complained how ratings of films are manipulated on payment of money. Films that don't pay have their ratings downgraded. BMS did not respond to KFCC demands for an explanation. Now KFCC members have to go to BMS for film festival passes! 

There are also concerns of how BMS got to know of the films that would be screened in the festival even before the official announcements and selections were made. As of now there are no answers. The only reality is that BMS, which does not have a healthy relationship with the Kannada film industry, is running BIFFes. 

Speaking to Chitraloka, president of KCA, Suneel Puranik, said that the tieup with BMS has happened before he took over on January 2. Puranik has been working day and night to make the BIFFes a success and his work has been appreciated by everyone. "But the tieup with BMS is not in my hands. After registering online passes can be collected at the Academy, Suchitra Film Society or the Information Department. Now it has been extended to the Film Chamber," he said. Any problems will be corrected Puranik promised.

Kannada Film Producers Association President Ramakrishna (Praveen Kumar), said "this is a bad development. We are now in a situation where we cannot give one or two passes to anyone who seeks for it." Not all producers and KFCC members are tech savvy. Online registration for them is a big issue. With physical registration completely stopped, they are facing a huge issue with registering for the festival.

In a shocking statement, the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy chairman Mr Suneel Puranik has alleged that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) is 'waste body'. 

He has further said that being nominated to CBFC's advisory panel is also a waste and it is nothing but a thankless job as the members have nothing to do but to watch four movies in a day which pays them a meagre of only Rs. 1500 for doing so!

Terming the CBFC body as a 'waste', which determines the outcome of a movie for public exhibition through censorship, has taken everyone in the film industry, especially the noted filmmakers and many more who have served the body in the past by surprise. Further, the statement allegedly made by the present KCA Chairman has shocked the entire film fraternity and the others concerned.

It is learnt that Mr Suneel Puranik has allegedly made such an astonishing statement during a telephonic conversation with a journalist who had called to seek for his reaction over the latest 71 appointments made by the government to the State's CBFC's advisory panel including his own son Mr Sagar who has no experience in the movie making but for working in television and short films.

The appointment made by the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to the State body's panel, has not gone well in the sandalwood, as senior filmmakers and noted personalities in the Kannada film industry have criticised the appointments as majority of the newly appointed members lack experience in movie making. They say that it is more of a politically backed appointment than based on the required qualifications.

The telephonic conversation also reveals how Mr Puranik had stopped his own son's short film from getting into a festival. However, Mr Sagar son of Puranik claims the film festival recognition as his achievements! It is also a big mystery as to how the same short film eventually won an award at the festival competition. 

Mystery continues as the questions raised over the qualifications and experience of newly nominated members to the advisory panel of State's CBFC remain unanswered.

Whether the CBFC body is a big waste or the majority of the newly appointed members for no proper qualification or the shocking statement made by the KCA chairman has certainly shook the Kannada film industry.

Actor, director and Producer Suneel Puranik, who is more popular for his works in Kannada television, says that he feels proud to be the chairman of Karnataka Chalanchitra Academy.

Speaking to the media after taking charge of the post, he was reacting to criticisms over his selection and eligibility to hold the post of KCA chairman. He goes on to add that he has more than 32 years of experience in the industry with 25 films to his credit as an actor along with experience in production. 

"I have acted in the films made by senior filmmakers such as G V Iyer, Somashekar, Dinesh Babu, Phaniramchandra, Girish Kasaravalli and others. That apart, I have the experience of working as a jury and as well as judge for National Film Awards on three occasions," he says.

On criticism, he says that it is very much needed to work effectively. He wraps up, saying that his immediate duty is to fix the schedule for next Bengaluru International Film Festival.

He thanks Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa for appointing him as KCA Chairman.

ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಅವರ ಮೇಲೆ ಈಗ ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಆರೋಪ ಕೇಳಿ ಬಂದಿದೆ. ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗಷ್ಟೇ ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ಪುತ್ರ, ಸ್ನೇಹಿತರು, ಬಳಗದವರನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಸದಸ್ಯರನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಆರೋಪ ಹೊತ್ತಿದ್ದರು ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್. ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದ ಸೀನಿಯರುಗಳೆಲ್ಲ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದ್ದರು. ಅದು ಮಾತು ಮಾತಲ್ಲೇ ಮುಗಿದು ಹೋಯ್ತು. ಈಗ ಅವರ ವಿರುದ್ಧ ಕೇಳಿ ಬಂದಿರೋದು ವಂಚನೆಯ ಆರೋಪ. ದುರ್ಬಳಕೆಯ ಆರೋಪ. ಅದೂ ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಕೋಟಿಯ ವಂಚನೆ ಆರೋಪ.

ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಇಂಟರ್ ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್ ಫಿಲಂ ಫೆಸ್ಟಿವಲ್‍ನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಅವರು ಉದ್ಘಾಟನಾ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಡಗೀತೆ ಹಾಡಿದ ಗಾಯಕರಿಗೆ, ಕೇವಲ ಐವರು ಗಾಯಕರಿಗೆ 13 ಲಕ್ಷ, 75 ಸಾವಿರ ಬಿಲ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅಂದರೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಗಾಯಕರಿಗೆ 3 ಲಕ್ಷಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಹಣ. ಅದೂ ನಾಡಗೀತೆ ಹಾಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾತ್ರ.

ಇನ್ನು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಊಟಕ್ಕೆ ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಬಿಲ್ 820 ರೂ. ಊಟ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಾರ್ಮಲ್. ಬಿಲ್ ಇಂಟರ್‍ನ್ಯಾಷನಲ್.

ಕುಳಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳೋಕೆ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಪ್ಲಾಸ್ಟಿಕ್ ಚೇರುಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೂಡಾ 820 ರೂ. ಬಾಡಿಗೆ. ದಿನಕ್ಕೆ.

ಇವುಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಆರೋಪ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದು ನಿರ್ಮಾಪಕ ಮದನ್ ಪಟೇಲ್. ಆರೋಪಕ್ಕಷ್ಟೇ ಸೀಮಿತರಾಗಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಸಿಬಿಗೆ ದೂರು ನೀಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಫಿಲಂ ಫೆಸ್ಟಿವಲ್ ಹೊರತುಪಡಿಸಿಯೇ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಗೆ 18 ಕೋಟಿ ಕೇಳಿ, ಮುಖ್ಯಮಂತ್ರಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ ಯಡಿಯೂರಪ್ಪ ಬೈದ ಮೇಲೆ 12 ಕೋಟಿಗೆ ಇಳಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮನವಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಮತ್ತೆ ಆಗ ಸಿಎಂ ಆಗಿದ್ದ ಯಡಿಯೂರಪ್ಪರಿಂದ ಬೈಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದರು ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್. ಅದನ್ನು ವಿಧಾನಸೌಧದ ಗೋಡೆಗಳು ಈಗಲೂ ಮಾತನಾಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಈಗ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿನ ಎರಡೂವರೆ ಕೋಟಿ ವಂಚನೆ ಆರೋಪವೂ ಅವರ ತಲೆಗೇರಿದೆ.

ಇನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಮೊದಲ ವೆಬ್ ಸರಣಿ ಬೈ2ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಕಾನ್ಸೆಪ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು ನಾನು. ದಕ್ಷಿಣ ಭಾರತದ ಅತಿದೊಡ್ಡ ಶಾರ್ಟ್ ಫಿಲಂ ಮಹಾನ್ ಹುತಾತ್ಮ. ಆ ಶಾರ್ಟ್ ಫಿಲಂ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಿದ್ದವನು ನಾನು. ಆ ಶಾರ್ಟ್ ಫಿಲಂಗೆ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಉಪರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪತಿಗಳಿಂದ ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಸ್ವೀಕರಿಸಿದ್ಧೇನೆ. ಶಾರ್ಟ್ ಫಿಲಂಗೆ ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪಡೆದ ಮೊದಲ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ ನಾನು. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಡೊಳ್ಳು ಎಂಬ ಫೀಚರ್ ಫಿಲ್ಮ್ ಡೈರೆಕ್ಟ್ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. 9ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸೀರಿಯಲ್ಲುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ನಟಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಇದರ ನಡುವೆ ಟಿವಿ ಜಾಹೀರಾತು, ಕಾರ್ಪೊರೇಟ್ ಫಿಲಂಗಳನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿದ್ಧೇನೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ನನಗೆ ನನ್ನದೇ ಆದ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಗುರುತು ಮೂಡಿಸಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯಿದೆ ಎಂದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಕಿರುತೆರೆಯ ಸ್ಟಾರ್ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರೆಂದೇ ಹೆಸರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಹೊಸ ಜವಾಬ್ದಾರಿ, ಹೊಸ ಹುದ್ದೆ ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಂದಿನಿಂದ ಅವರು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ.

50ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಧಾರಾವಾಹಿಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಿರುವ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್, ನಟರಾಗಿಯೂ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗೆ ಚಿರಪರಿಚಿತ ಮುಖ. ಗುರುಕುಲ ಎಂಬ ಚಿತ್ರದ ನಿರ್ದೇಶಕರೂ ಹೌದು. ಹಲವು ಸಿನಿಮಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಷಕ ನಟರಾಗಿ ಬಣ್ಣ ಹಚ್ಚಿರುವ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಹೊಸ ವರ್ಷದ ದಿನ ಯಡಿಯೂರಪ್ಪ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಶುಭ ಸುದ್ದಿ ನೀಡಿತ್ತು. ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾಗಿ ನೇಮಿಸಿದ್ದ ಪತ್ರ ಜ.1ರಂದು ಕೈಸೇರಿತ್ತು.

ಹುದ್ದೆ ವಹಿಸಿಕೊಂಡ ಹೊತ್ತಲ್ಲೇ ಹಲವು ಕನಸುಗಳನ್ನೂ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್. ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿಯ ಕೆಲಸ ಕಾರ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ರಾಜ್ಯದ ವಿವಿಧ ಭಾಗಗಳಿಗೆ ವಿಸ್ತರಿಸುವ ಕನಸು ಹೊತ್ತು ಕಾಲಿಟ್ಟಿರುವ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಎದುರು ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಅಂ.ರಾ. ಚಿತ್ರೋತ್ಸವದ ಹೊಣೆಗಾರಿಕೆ ಇದೆ

ಅರೆ.. ಒಂದು ಚಿತ್ರದ ಹಣೆಬರಹ ನಿರ್ಧರಿಸುವ ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯನಾಗೋದು ವೇಸ್ಟ್ ಕೆಲಸವಾ? ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಗತಿಯಿಲ್ಲದವರು ಮಾಡೋ ಕೆಲಸವಾ? ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಅವರ ಉತ್ತರ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಹಾಗೆ ಅನ್ನಿಸೋದು ಸಹಜ. ಈ ಆಡಿಯೋ ಕೇಳಿದ, ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದ ಹಿರಿಯರಿಗೂ ಇದು ಶಾಕ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೇಳಿರುವುದು ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರಾದ್ದರಿಂದ ತಾವು ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ವೇಸ್ಟ್ ಇರಬಹುದೇನೋ ಎಂಬ ಸಂಶಯ ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿ ಮಾಜಿ ಸದಸ್ಯರಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರೆ ಅದು ಸಹಜವೇ ಬಿಡಿ.

ಆದರೆ, ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿಯನ್ನೇ ವೇಸ್ಟ್, ಅಲ್ಲಿರುವವರೆಲ್ಲ ವೇಸ್ಟ್ ಎನ್ನುವ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಹೊಂದಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರು ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ಕನ್ನಡ ಚಿತ್ರರಂಗ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆಯೆಂದು ಭಾವಿಸುತ್ತದೆಯೇ? ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಆ ಆಡಿಯೋದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾನು ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷನಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ನನ್ನ ಮಗನ ಶಾರ್ಟ್ ಫಿಲಂ ಒಂದನ್ನು ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗೆ ಬರದಂತೆ ತಡೆದಿದ್ದೆ. ಆಗ ಮಣಿವಣ್ಣನ್ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಅಭಿನಂದಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ನನ್ನ ಮಗನ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಡೊಳ್ಳು ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರೋತ್ಸವಕ್ಕೆ ಬೇಡ ಎಂದಿದ್ದೆ. ನಾನು ಆ ಮಂಡಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೆ ಎನ್ನುವ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೆ ನನ್ನ ಮಗನಿಗೇ ಅನ್ಯಾಯ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೆ ಎಂದೂ ಆ ಆಡಿಯೋದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ಅವು ಪ್ರಶಸ್ತಿ ಪುರಸ್ಕೃತ ಶಾರ್ಟ್ ಫಿಲಂಗಳು. ಅವೇ ನನ್ನ ಸಾಧನೆ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಪುತ್ರ ಸಾಗರ್. ಅರೆ.. ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ನೋ ಎಂದಿದ್ದ ಆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳು, ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆಗೇ ಬರದಿದ್ದ ಆ ಚಿತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ಅವಾರ್ಡ್ ಬಂದಿದ್ದು ಹೇಗೆ?

ಏನೋ.. ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿಯ ನೂತನ ಸದಸ್ಯರ ಅರ್ಹತೆ, ಮಾನದಂಡ ಹೇಗೆ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲವೋ.. ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಅಕಾಡೆಮಿ ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷರ ಮಾತುಗಳೂ ಹಾಗೇ.. ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ.  ಒಂದಂತೂ ಸತ್ಯ. ಸುನಿಲ್ ಪುರಾಣಿಕ್ ಅವರು ವೇಸ್ಟ್ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವರು ಈ ಹಿಂದೆ ಚಲನಚಿತ್ರ ಸೆನ್ಸಾರ್ ಮಂಡಳಿಯ ಸದಸ್ಯರಂತೂ ಆಗಿದ್ದವರಲ್ಲ ಎಂದರೆ ಕುಚೋದ್ಯ ಎಂದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಡಿ.
