The three stars, Upendra, Sudeep and Yash, who are involved in this clash are all stars in their own right. Let us see how they have fared since 2010. 

Upendra: Upendra is always known for doing things differently and for having thoughts and ideas that are unique and peculiar. People are always curious about his films, whether he directs them or only acts in them. He gave a super hit movie in his 2010 directorial Super. In 2011 another hit came in the form of Shrimathi. In 2012 Aarakshaka was an average hit but the first Kannada 3D Movie Katari Veera Surasundarangi was a sensation followed by Godfather and Kalpana. In 2013 Topiwala got back the money to the producer and in 2014 Brahma and Super Ranga were hits. In 2015 Shivam was one of the costilets movies followed by his directional movie Uppi2. This year Kaplana 2 was another hit.

Sudeep: Sudeep's movies in 2010 Just Maath Maathalli, Mr Theertha, Kiccha Huccha and Veera Parampare got back money to producers. Kempe Gowda and Vishnuvardhana were  blockbusters in 2011.  Once Sudeep movie Eega was released in 2012 Sudeep became an all-Indian actor and lot of expectations started building up for his movies. In 2013 Varadhanayaka did well and Bachchan was a hit movie. Sudeep directed and acted movie Maanikya looted the box office. Same thing repeated in Ranna in 2015. This years Kotigobba 2 created all-time record in Sudeep's career.

Yash: Yash movie Modalasala was released in 2010 which was an average hit. In 2011 Rajadhani was agaion an average but Kirataka made profit. In 2012 Lucky and Jaanu made profit. The movie Drama was released in the same year and from this movie luck turned in favour of Yash. Googly released in 2013 and Gajakesari released in 2014 sealed the top position of Yash. Mr and Mrs Ramachari released in the same year created an all time box office record. Masterpiece released in 2015 was a smashing hit and it collected nearly 13.8 crores in the first week itself.

Now let us see what happens to Sudeep, Upendra and Yash acted movies which is getting released on 28th. Mukunda Murari is Censored and they are not going to change the release date. The only way to avoid a clash is for K Manju to postpone the release date of Santhu Straight Forward. But Manju has clearly said that he will not do it and has announced the release date. 

Mukunda Murari is produced by MN Kumar who is one of the top line producers, distributor and exhibitor. He himself has more than 80 theatres under his control. For BKT areas Mysore Talkies is doing the distribution. Santhu Straight forward is produced by another top line producer K Manju. Both MN Kumar and K Manju are close friends

For Santhu Straight Forward the entire Karnataka distribution is taken care of by Jayanna who is known as a lucky hand and who has produced many films of Yash. Jayanna is also a producer and distributor and has a good control over the theatres. Both Mysore Talkies and Jayanna Films office are on the same building in Gandhinagar!

What ever it is. Both Mukunda Murari and Santu Straight Forward are Kannada movies and Chitraloka wishes both movies to be success.

Yash's new film Santhu Straight Forward has been censored with U Certificate. Speaking to Chitraloka producer K Manju confirmed that the movie is releasing on October 28th.

Many industry persons was saying Santhu Straight Forward cannot be censored so soon since shooting for the song was finished on 16th October. Regarding this Manju told to chitraloka we had not told anybody that we are doing online editing on the spot and I could manage the NOC letters from the other movies who are in the queue for censor. I wanted to release the movie on October 27th but I have changed to October 28th.

The film is produced by K Manju and directed by Mahesh Rao starring Yash, Radhika Pandit in lead.

The upcoming clash of the biggies at the Sandalwood box office on October 28 has made everyone sit up and take notice. The multistarrer Mukunda Murari starring Upendra and Sudeep is heading for a straight clash with Santu Straight Forward, starring the real-life pair of Yash and Radhika Pandit. Though this is not the first time that such a clash of big films is happening in the Kannada film industry, this current clash could be a game changer for many reasons.

Chitraloka gives you a breakdown of what can go right and what could go wrong. It is a common refrain that the Kannada film industry is small compared to the neighbouring industries and should be cautious about investing too much. But today the films of top stars has a minimum budget of Rs 15 crores. Usually it is Rs 20 crore. The next level of stars too are not far behind. The budget of films of these second line of stars cost Rs 10 crore each. 

Whenever films of such top stars release other producers and distributors keep away from releasing their small budget films in the same week. Each and every star film is anxiously waited by the film industry as it can make or break not only the particular producer but the business of many distributors, exhibitors and others are dependent on them. If a big budget film fails at the box office, it will affect the entire industry to some extent. For example, the distributors would then think twice about buying the next big budget film. 

So producers and exhibitors take extra care and see that two movies of big stars do not clash on the same day. This is because even if one fails, the industry will be affected. But they are not successful all the time. There have been many instances of two star films releasing on the same day or a day apart. This has happened for many decades.

Chitraloka collected such statistics from 2010 where star films have clashed. On 14th October 2010, Puneeth Rajkumar starrer Jackie released and the following day on 15th October, Sudeep's movie Kiccha Huccha released. The following year on 8th December 2011 Sudeep starrer Vishnuvardhana released and on the following day 9th December 2011, Ganesh's movie Shyloo released.

In 2012, on November 23rd Yash-starrer Drama and Auditya’s  Edegarike released on the same day. In 2014 Duniya Vijay’s Simhadri released on 2nd October and Dhruva Sarja’s Bahaddur was released on 3rd October. In 2015, the 1st of January saw Ganesh acted Khushi Khushiyagi release and on 2nd, Upendra acted Shivam released. In the same year on August 14th Ganesh and Upendra’s movies clashed again with Buguri and Uppi 2 releasing on the same day.

But this clash on October 28, 2016 will be different and change the way Sandalwood thinks and works. Check Part 2 of this series for the analysis.

As we have seen, there are one or two instances almost every year where the films of top stars clash. But this is the first time that three stars will see their films release on the same day, though it is only two films. That is history in another way.On 28th of this month K Manju produced Santhu Straight Forward starring Yash and Radhika Pandit is releasing. On the same day Kiccha Sudeep-Upendra starrer Mukunda Murari is also releasing.

There is no doubt that the films of all these three stars get a grand opening at the box office and whatever the condition of the films, the opening will be great. The films of all three mint money. In this case, both the films are heavy budget. Even until a couple of days ago, most Sandalwood industry people were betting that the two films will not clash at the box office and there would be an internal adjustment and one of the films will release on November 11 while the other would release on October 28. But all their confidence have been punctured with the producers of both the films sticking to October 28 for the release. 

Mukunda Murari is a remake of Oh My God and has already announced the release date for October 28th and their movie is already submitted for a censor certificate.

Only the shooting of a song for Santhu Straight Forward is pending while the rest of the film is ready. Speaking to Chitraloka, producer K Manju said that he will release the film on October 28 at any cost. "I have been telling everyone in the industry that we are releasing the film as per the date announced. But I don’t know why Mukunda Murari announced their film's release on the same day. Now it looks like a clash is inevitable. But I am ready for anything and will release the movie."
