The Jury committee which was engaged to select the best film, artists and technicians of the film has really made a big mess in its selection. While there can be a debate on some selections , one thing is certain. There seems to be less of application among Jury members to select the best in each category.
The selection of K.S.R.Doss for the prestigious Puttanna Kanagal Award and later changing it to Jnanapit award winner and award winning film director Girish Karnad who is certainly the most deserved person to receive this award calls for severe condemnation.
Even while Bhargava, the Chiarman of the Jury Committee was announcing the name of K.S.R.Doss there were severe criticism from the journalists who were attending the press conference. Rather than defending his stand in selecting Doss, Bhargava simply changed his decision and made an announcement that Girish Karnad has been selected for the award.
This was the biggest Joke that occurred today afternoon at the press conference. A veteran director like Bhargava should have struck to his stand or should have said that he will discuss the issue with other members of the committee. Even the members of the Jury were there in the press conference and the change of name was announced in presence of all the jury members.
What will happen now? Doss has directed around 90 films so far in his career out of which more than twenty films were in Kannada. Doss has made successful films with Dr. Vishnuvardhan, Rajnikanth, Arjun Sarja, Shankar Nag and others. It is not that he did not deserve the award, though there can be eternal debate on the quality of the films. But once the Jury had selected his name, what was the necessity in changing this award after criticism by some media personalities.
Now, it has to be seen whether Girish Karnad will accept this award for which he was not selected initially, but had come to him by default.
